Album Review: The Great Gatsby (2013) Soundtrack:

Perhaps the most anticipated film of the year, Baz Luhrman’s film adaption of the 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby, has been causing quite a stir. And perhaps getting just as much attention as the film itself is thesoundtrack to the movie, produced by rapper Jay-Z. “About a week ago, while I was listening to music via YouTube, I began perusing through the “Recommended” section to the left of the page. I feel as though this section is often overlooked (at least it was by me) but it’s a musical goldmine. So often it has led me to fantastic artists who I would never have known about otherwise. And, once again, the goldmine didn’t let me down.

While browsing haphazardly through a sea of unfamiliar artists, I settled on one by the name of Delilah. Her single “Shades Of Grey” was being featured and after listening to it, I knew that her music was something I wanted to investigate further. After exploring the UK-based singer-songwriter in depth, I was pleasantly surprised.”

“Throughout the night, Springsteen alluded to the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in his home state of New Jersey. As Bruce himself explained, they are a glorified bar band who people will always associate with the Jersey Shore. Before beginning the sixth song on of the set, “My City of Ruins”, a song from his 2002 album The Rising, Springsteen said some emotional words about his hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey. He reflected on how the town had faced hard times before and he portrayed a strong belief his home city and state would remain strong and fight back against the unfortunate circumstances brought upon them.”

“The band originated in Jamaica in the 1960s, and began unleashing their “island sound” upon the world. The band has consisted of several members throughout the years, but the constant has always been the frontman,Frederick “Toots” Hibbert. The Toots and the Maytals have created numerous albums since their debut, with a whopping57 albums available on iTunes.

This band is no “one hit wonder”. And right here, in downtown State College, they proved why they’ve been able to be please fans for over five decades.

The State Theatre was packed with a mixed crowd of both younger and older people, and while the ages among the audience varied, we all shared the same energy. As soon as the light dimmed, the audience began to chant: “Toots! Toots! Toots!” in unison.”

“Since Bad Books, the indie supergroup made up of members of Manchester Orchestra and singer/songwriter Kevin Devine, released their debut self-titled album in 2010, a lot has gone on. Manchester Orchestra released Simple Math, their third studio album in May of 2011 and Devine released his sixth studio album Between the Concrete and Clouds in September 2011. Heck, in addition to that, Manchester Orchetra’s singer, Andy Hull, finished the final edition of his trilogy of solo albums under the moniker Right Away, Great Captain!. The first two albums were released in 2007 and 2008 respectively but Hull took his time with the third installment, entitled The Church of the Good Thief, and released it in June of this year. So with all this recording, along with touring, many were afraid that Bad Books first album might be a one and done operation. However, the group made it known that there would be more Bad Books and on October 9, they upheld that promise, as their second album, Bad Books: II, was released on Triple Crown Records.”

““Radioactive” is the second single released from Imagine Dragons’ debut albumNight Visions. It is the first track on the album and shows so much promise for the songs that follow. However, the remaining eleven tracks just cannot match up to what “Radioactive” provides, which was something I was shocked to find out. It was hard to believe that the rest of the album wouldn’t produce the same satisfaction that “Radioactive” had given me.”
